In LightBids a zone is a description of physical location within a project.  Zones are optional and you can use them as much or as little as best fits your workflow.

Using more zone detail can help organize larger more varied projects.  Less complicated project may not need to use zones at all.  For example, a small retail shop may only have one or two rooms.  It is probably not necessary to describe the location of each light.

On the other hand, in a large multi-tenant office building, using zones can help to separate out areas and tenant spaces to ensure that the proposals, reports, and installation instructions are clear.
